Shalom Baptist ChurchDecember 2004 Church History Overview of the first twelve months of Shalom Baptist Church of Byesville, Ohio History September 12, 2003, Shalom Baptist Church began meeting as an outreach group of Friendship Baptist Church in the basement of Pastor Jay and Lisa Henderson of Byesville, Ohio. The meetings were initially titled "Friday Night Peace" and the group met every Friday evening for an hour of worship followed by a fellowship meal. Attendance averaged 15 each Friday during those early months. As time progressed, attendance grew to an average of 21 per evening. Shalom Baptist Church incorporated in the State of Ohio on February 10, 2004. On June 19, 2004, Shalom Baptist began meeting on Saturday night with worship beginning at 6:00 pm followed by a fellowship meal each Saturday. High attendance for the first year was 35. Shalom Baptist Church also meets for prayer meeting every Wednesday night at 6:30 pm. Attendance on Wednesday evening averages 11. Worship Worship service begins with Praise and Worship music. Shalom’s Praise Team has seven regular members and sometimes expands to nine. Music for the worship is contemporary praise and worship with an occasional great hymn of the church. Prayer and sharing time follows the music. Pastor Jay provides the biblical teaching each week and our services conclude with the breaking of bread and the celebration of the Last Supper of our Lord Jesus Christ. Missions Shalom Baptist Church has been represented in the mission field on three occasions during the past year. A team with four members from Shalom Baptist Church assisted with the February 2004 mission outreach to the Corozal District, Belize, Central America and again was represented in June 2004 by a team of nine. Pastor Jay and his wife Lisa also made a trip in September 2004 to coordinate with the construction workers and supervisors associated with the building project. Shalom Baptist in conjunction with the Friendship Four Gospel Quartet has taken on the building of a home for the Benages family of San Narciso, Belize. The floor, walls, support columns and porch have been completed. The projected cost is $11,500 US. Shalom Baptist held a fundraiser (rest break) in May 2004 to raise funds for the house. Every active attendee participated in the project. In addition to the housing project the Belize mission has provided funds to enable a young man to continue his High School education, assisted in refurbishing a small business facility to assist a widow and her daughter to be able to make a living (Yoli’s Fast Food), provided computer equipment for use in the local school, provided paints for a local artist, auto parts, and are currently funding the technical school tuition for a young women thus enabling her to be able to provide a living not only for herself but also to assist her family. Benevolence Shalom encourages active benevolence activity within our own body to meet the needs of those within our group. Benevolence activities have included utility assistance, rent assistance, care and sunshine packages. Outreach On October 30, 2004, we held our first annual “Fall Festival” as an outreach to the community as well as a fellowship activity for our own members. The evening was a wonderful success with a total of 50 in attendance. Additional outreach activities have been targeted at youth and college age adults as described as part of our fellowship activities. Baptisms Shalom Baptist Church has celebrated one baptism during our first year of existence. Fellowship Activities In addition to our weekly fellowship meals Shalom Baptist has celebrated the Feast of the Passover (Messianic version with emphasis on Christ’s fulfillment of the prophesies). Shalom Baptist has sponsored a youth bowling event (following evening worship), board game fellowship (following evening worship), gospel sing attendance (Community Christian School event), youth paint ball tournaments and Thanksgiving dinner and Christmas party. Location Shalom Baptist Church has completed the preparations for a worship center location at 60718 Southgate Parkway in Cambridge, Ohio across from the Cambridge Country Club. It is an addition to the home/business of Iris Henderson. |
